Zander Louvier
Name:
“The Ruby Knight” Zander Louvier
Age:
31
Magic:
Scarlet Aurora
the creation and manipulation of brilliant red light. It is both a Caster and Holder type magic because much of it depends on Zander's weapon. This magically-energized light carries a lot of force, and is best used offensively, though it can be crystallized into ruby-like stone.
Counter Magic
Zander's secondary magic. It is also both a Caster and Holder type. When attacked by caster-type magic, rather than defending himself or evading Zander can hold out his open hand toward the incoming spell. His magic power condenses at that point and adapts to the incoming magic type as it approaches, and by the time Zander's hand is hit, his Counter is fully prepared, and for an instant he is able to neutralize the spell, or even send it back at the caster, if the adaptation went particularly well. After the caster spell has been neutralized or redirected, Zander loses all ability to influence the foreign magic, though using counters against the same type of magic becomes quicker in the future. This quickening occurs even if the counter should happen to fail, meaning that even if something beats Zander the first time there's no reason it would beat him again.
Magic Level:
S
Scarlet Sword: Red Slide – coats Zander's weapon in crimson light, giving it increased cutting power and a red afterglow. Suited for armored foes, and for cutting through offensive magic.
Scarlet Sword: Jagged Red Ruby – coats Zander's weapon in barbs and spurs of ruby, giving it increased ripping power. Suited for unarmored foes, and for tearing through defensive magic.
Scarlet Swath- The next swing of Zander's weapon sends out a slice of crimson light, capable of cutting and wounding at a distance. If it hits a surface, the light embeds itself and shines from the cut, making a weak spot.
Ruby Knight's Corona – Zander strikes a pose, and scarlet light begins to pour from the crystal parts of his armor. This light penetrates smoke, darkness, and even concealment magics, revealing all things unseen.
Ruby Knight's Precious Prison – a beam of crimson light shoots from the tip of his sword. It splashes upon hitting a target before crystallizing, trapping anything hit by it in a ruby shell.
Ruby Knight's Alliance – only useful when Zander's on horseback. Emanating his magic, Zander crystallizes his Scarlet Aurora onto his horse, creating a set of ruby armor plate for her.
Secret Move: True Warrior's Wailing Thrust – after gathering his energies, Zander charges forward. Red light wreaths his weapon, crystallizing the blade, before it extends forward with dizzying speed. The blade literally lengthens, extending up to a hundred times its own length, and is capable of penetrating nearly anything.
History:
Prior to joining Frenzy Plant, Zander was part of a trio of warriors called the Gem Knights, and the only man among them. His companions were Saiban Kai, the Sapphire Enchantress, and Brygid Thane, the Emerald Dragon Slayer. An alliance of necessity rather than friendship, the Gem Knights traveled the country of Bosco, fighting for various causes and performing various tasks. With Zander's weapon skill, Kai's magical aptitude, and Brygid's raw power, they made an excellent team of paper, but in real situations quarreled almost constantly. Arguments, petty disagreements, and even fighting were commonplace, always erupting when Kai's ego, Zander's morality and cautiousness, and Brygid's quick temper and rashness rubbed up against one another. Though they squabbled often, Zander never imagined that things would turn out the way they did.
After completing a job in Bosco for a certain Madame Curiae, the Gem Knights were framed for the murder of the Madame's longtime rival and sister, when in fact they had merely guarded Curiae against her sister's assassins. Hounded by the authorities, the Gem Knights crossed into Fiore, and after reaching safety had their worst confrontation yet. Not one of the members could agree on a course of action, or who was to blame for their wrongful accusation, and predictably the a brawl erupted. This time, however, none held anything back, and when the brawl was over, Saiban Kai lay dying. Without any sort of medical knowledge and no clinics for miles and miles, the others were powerless to help, and managed to grudgingly put aside their hatred for one another to bury Kai together. Then the Gem Knights parted ways, and Zander never saw Brygid again.
He did, however, continue to fight. After being a lieutenant in Fiore's Rune Knights for a while, Zander stumbled upon the guild Frenzy Plant in Oak Town, in an economic slump, its master Sanders sick, and sorely in need of someone to whip it into shape. Leaving the Rune Knights, Zander applied himself to this task wholeheartedly, and soon had Frenzy Plant back into working order. For this, and for his ability to beat anyone in the guild in a duel, he was given the S-rank.
Personality:
Zander can best be described as a true knight. He is honorable, disciplined, and totally at home in a military-style environment. Though exceedingly cautious and superstitious, he is a courageous and inspiring warrior when it comes down to it, fighting with skill and intelligence. He adopts much the same sort of rational, deft operation when it comes to organizing Frenzy Plant and training many of its members in the art of combat. He doesn't like to kill enemies, or to see his allies perform dangerous, risky acts to save the day, but is willing to make sacrifices when he knows there's a lot on the line. He talks a lot about luck and fortune, and can be quick to condemn something or someone he sees as bad luck, though often enough his gut feeling turns out to be well-founded. It takes some effort to earn his respect, but once earned, he will fight for a person tooth and nail.
Team Members:
None, though he has a sort of partnership with Indigo Afina given their shared authority.
Three Strengths:
1. Cautious – Given Zander's level of preparation and mindful, careful nature, it is difficult to catch him off guard, trick him with conventional means, or otherwise surprise him, whether in everyday interaction or in combat.
2. Soldier's Mind – of all of Frenzy Plant's members, Zander has one of the more military-oriented minds. He respects hierarchy, practices discipline and expects it from others, and is a very competent field commander. Indeed, with the rarity of the times that the guild master has taken the field, it may appear to outsiders that Zander is the big boss.
3. Zander is capable of following through on all that he promises, backing up everything he says about himself, and being honest about all that he knows and does. His word is as good as his bond.
Three Weaknesses:
1. Not a morning person – for the first twenty minutes or so after waking up, Zander is effectively blind, as the unique quirk mentioned in the Additional Details section severely dehydrates his eyes overnight. This is perhaps the only time that he isn't expecting the unexpected.
2. Zander fights with skill and technique rather than brute strength, and should it come down to a contest of sheer force, he is at a disadvantage. Naturally, he tries to plan around this.
3. Some of the lowlier members of the guild displease Zander because their lack of discipline and lesser competence. He is reluctant to work with them or advise them being sent into the field, insisting that they're not ready. This hasn't earned him any points with most of the C-rank wizards, and makes him less approachable for newbies.
Greatest Love:
Glorious victory!
Motivation:
To one day become the master of Frenzy Plant, becoming an amazing fighter and a brilliant strategist simultaneously.
Additional Details:
Zander has the odd habit of wearing his armor, or at least its burgundy undersuit, just about everywhere. It is even rumored that he sleeps in it, lest some treacherous ne'er-do-well get the drop on him as he slumbers. In actuality, Zander sleeps with his eyes open, and takes eyedrops in the morning to rehydrate them.
Zander owns a horse named Buttons. He loves her as if she were the best pet in the world.
